Tips for Safe Coffee Consumption During Sahur in Ramadan: Doctor's Advice
Tips for Safe Coffee Consumption During Sahur
HOT NEWS INDONESIA - As Ramadan approaches, many individuals adjust their daily routines, including their dietary habits during Sahur, the pre-dawn meal before fasting begins.

Among the customary beverages, coffee holds a popular status for its energizing properties.

However, according to Dr. Marinda Asiah Nuril Haya, a lecturer at the Family Medicine Program of FKUI, indulging in coffee during Sahur might not be the wisest choice due to its diuretic effects.

Traditionally, coffee serves as a morning booster, but its consumption during Sahur can lead to increased urination frequency, contributing to dehydration throughout the fasting day.

Dr. Nuril suggests a simple alteration in drinking habits by postponing coffee intake until after breaking the fast, allowing for immediate hydration with sufficient water intake.

"Perhaps the caffeine's effects can linger for a few hours, but afterward, the diuretic effect exacerbates fluid loss, leading to lethargy and dehydration. Hence, it's advisable to avoid it," Dr. Nuril emphasizes.

For those adamant about retaining their coffee ritual during Sahur, Dr. Nuril advises ensuring adequate hydration levels.

She recommends consuming at least two glasses of water during Sahur, followed by another glass after breaking the fast, one more post-Maghrib prayer, and maintaining a steady intake until the next Sahur, totaling three to four glasses.

This regimen helps counterbalance the diuretic effects of coffee, ensuring sufficient fluid intake.

During Ramadan, nourishing the body with nutritious food and beverages is crucial for sustaining energy levels throughout the fasting period.

While Sahur aims to prepare the body for the day ahead, certain foods and drinks, such as coffee, might not align with this objective.

Understanding the potential drawbacks, particularly the dehydrating effects of coffee, enables individuals to make informed choices, prioritizing hydration and well-being during this sacred month.

By prioritizing hydration and making simple adjustments to coffee consumption habits, individuals can navigate Sahur with greater ease, ensuring a nourished and well-hydrated body to sustain them through the day of fasting.

As the Ramadan season unfolds, incorporating these recommendations can contribute to a healthier fasting experience for individuals observing this sacred tradition.***
